About

The Baker Hound is a relatively new breed created by Logan and his family in 2002. They created the breed as not only bay dogs but also to assist them in tracking wounded game on a hunt. The Baker family had hunted with Bluetick Coonhounds for generations and they were great dogs for finding wounded game but when larger, more dangerous, game like bear, big cat, and boar started becoming more prominent they needed dogs with a little more grit. They didn't want to lose the qualities they loved in the Blueticks but they needed to add more grit and tenacity to deal with the big game so they researched and came up with a few options. After talking to others and watching the breeds work they decided on the Catahoula Leopard Dog and crossed their grittiest Bluetick on a fantastic Catahoula bay dog and the resulting puppies absolutely blew them out of the water. The puppies had the nose to track both hot and cold trails and also the grit and tenacity to keep going when things got rough while still being intelligent enough to back off if things got too sketchy.

The original purpose of the Baker Hound was to be bay dogs and also potentially back up catch dogs for large game while still being able to track wounded game on other hunts. They are a medium sized dog built to last for long periods of time over rough terrain while staying sound and they move actively, effortlessly, and efficiently to get the job done.
