When the idea of bringing Dalmatians into Round Table was brought up by English trainer, Elizabeth, there was instant confusion and slight balking at the idea. All of the dogs of RTS are working dogs with jobs around the property but there wasn't really a job for Dals. There was hesitancy but after a ton of research the team agreed to bring one Damatian in as a "test run" for how the breed meshed with the flow of life at RTS. Haku was that "test dog" and we are so glad he was. Haku has the typical energetic and goofy personality of the Dalmatian but he wasn't so clowny that he is impossible to work with. He came to RTS with the basics already trained in thanks to his previous home which made the change to his new home even easier. Within days of his arrival Elizabeth decided to take him out on a trail ride with one of her Thoroughbreds and her current sidekick, our black Poodle stud dog Peter, and he absolutely exceeded all her expectations. When Elizabeth takes a dog with her on a trail ride the dog has to be able to not only keep up with the horse (which is usually a high energy and fast paced Thoroughbred) but also listen to commands from horseback and be intelligent enough to navigate the tricky trails she takes. Haku did all of those things with ease and that trail ride was what really made Elizabeth fall head over heals for him and claim him as one of her personal dogs. It took a few weeks for the rest of the team to come around but after watching Haku excel at everything they threw at him. Around the property Haku is the definition of "velcro dog" which could be problematic with all of the horses but luckily he has that Dalmatian knack with horses and seems to always have an eye on where they are at all times. Haku also proved himself to be on a nearly equal level of barn clearing as our terriers within a few weeks of coming here. He's also always willing to do anything we ask whether that be go on a trail ride, try out a new Agility course, go check fences around the ranch, or just be copilot when someone goes to town, he's always ready. Overall Haku is a fantastic dog to have around and he proved Elizabeth right when she said Dals would be fantastic ranch dog and trail companion. If all we were looking for was a good farm dog then Haku filled that position perfectly but since we were looking to add a Dalmatian breeding program he needed to have the build, movement, and pedigree to back up his fantastic personality. Luckily for us, Haku has all three of those in spades. He is solidly built but he didn't lose the elegance of the Dalmatian breed in the big bones and strong musculature. He looks like a dog that could go all day and stay solid and ready for more but also look good doing it. He carries himself with such amazing grace and presence and his gaits are effortless, efficient, and beautiful. When you look at his pedigree it's not surprising that he is the way he is. Even if you just look at his parents they're not only beautiful but they proved themselves in multiple different venues and then if you look past the parents into the pedigree behind them it's full of conformation champions so it's not surprising that he is as talented and beautiful as he is. Haku was a fantastic dog to bring to the team to test out Dalmatians as part of our kennel and we are excited to see him follow in his parents' footsteps and not only rack up titles in the ring but also produce fantastic puppies when he starts breeding.
